The Aeolian archipelago is made up of seven islands, originally underwater volcanoes that emerged from the waters about 700,000 years ago in the following order: Panarea, Filicudi, Alicudi, Salina, Lipari, Vulcano, and lastly Stromboli, which is perhaps 40,000 years old. The last emergence was that of Vulcanello (a small peninsula on the island of Vulcano) in 183 BC, while the last pumice and obsidian flows on Mount Pelato in Lipari occurred about 1,500 years ago.

The first human settlements appeared on the islands of Lipari and Salina several centuries before 4000 B.C., attracted by obsidian, the black volcanic glass erupted from the volcano of Lipari, an important resource at that time.
This volcano became extinct after a period of intense activity, which also produced the pumice stones that are still exploited today. When humans had not yet discovered metalworking, obsidian was the sharpest material available and was therefore highly sought after. Large quantities were exported from Lipari, and this trade brought extraordinary prosperity to the island.
Only more than a thousand years later, around 3000 B.C., when obsidian trade was at its peak, the smaller islands of the Aeolian Archipelago also began to be inhabited. During this long period, the first settlers arriving from Sicily were followed by other populations, perhaps from the Adriatic coasts, who came to take control of this exceptional source of wealth and settled on what is now the natural fortress known as the Castle.
After several centuries of strong economic and demographic decline (second half of the 3rd millennium B.C.), the Aeolian Islands experienced another flourishing period when populations from mainland Greece settled there. To them we owe the cycle of legends echoed in Homer’s Odyssey, in the episode of King Aeolus welcoming Ulysses and granting him the bag of winds. Shortly after 2000 B.C., settlements of round huts surrounded by stone and mud walls appeared. Around 900 B.C., the prosperous settlement of Lipari and almost the entire island were almost completely destroyed.
In the second half of the 8th century B.C., the phenomenon of Greek colonization of Southern Italy and Sicily began. Lipari was colonized by a group of Greeks of Doric origin, who had to build a powerful fleet to secure naval supremacy.
Lipari long sided with Syracuse, then fell under Carthaginian rule, under which it remained when the First Punic War broke out, becoming one of Carthage’s most important naval bases. In 252 B.C. it was conquered and destroyed by the Romans.
During the Early Middle Ages, Lipari became a pilgrimage destination, and the islands flourished with a rich and colorful heritage of traditions. At that time there was also a sudden resurgence of volcanic activity on Lipari: the crater of Mount Pelato erupted immense masses of pumice, while the Pirrera crater produced a flow of obsidian.
In 839 Lipari was destroyed by a Muslim raid, during which the relics of Saint Bartholomew were desecrated. These were later collected by elderly monks and transported first to Salerno and then to Benevento. Lipari remained almost completely deserted for several centuries, until the reconquest of Sicily by the Normans, when an urban settlement began to form again.
After numerous hardships, Lipari was rebuilt and repopulated by Charles V and from then on shared the fate of Sicily and the Kingdom of Naples.
